I am wanting to plant grass in the backyard. It is shady during the morning and gets filterd sun in the late afternoon. The soil is hard and compacted, sandy, and rocky. I am not sure if I should sew bermuda seed or lay St Augustine grass. We do have a pool in the back and kids and dogs that will be constantly running on the seed or new sod. Which choice would be the best for my conditions and how long would it take to have a decent carpet of grass?

Amy,

That sounds like a tough spot for grass to grow. Bermuda will struggle with that much shade. St. Augustine can take the shade but will not tolerate the foot traffic very well. I think between the two you'd be happiest with St. Augustine. You can either solid sod the area for immediate coverage or plant plugs or strips of St. Augustine about a foot apart and get coverage by the end of summer season.
