I really like this shurb. Would it grow okay in my zone (5)? Can it
be pruned to keep it smaller than its full growth size? We want to
plant these on the north side of our house where it gets full sun in
the morning and full shade in the afternoon. Will this work for this
plant? Also, can we buy direct from you if I cannot find it at the
dealers you list in my area? When is the best time to plant this
shrub? I have a span of about 35 feet on the north side of my house,
would it look okay to plant all Blue Girl Holly or should I change
the height by using a different shrub on each end. Your suggestions
would be very much appreciated.

Thank you,

Edwina McHugh

Hollies will grow quite well in a location with a sun all morning. They do not do as well in full shade all day long. Hollies need an evenly moist yet well drained soil that is acidic. They also need protection from harsh winter winds.

The blue hollies, including this one, can be pruned to maintain a specific size. Allowing the end plants to grow larger can look nice, it is a matter of personal taste whether or not it would look good with your style of house and overall landscape.

Frequent pruning will however limit berry production. For berry production you will also need to plant a male holly that blooms at the same time as your female holly. (With Blue Girl, Blue Boy is usually planted to serve this purpose.)

I would suggest you consult with your local county extension and/or professionally trained nurseryman to see if the site you have in mind is appropriate for hollies. If not, they should be able to suggest substitutes based on a more detailed understanding of the planting site and your overall design goals.

Finally, Monrovia is a wholesale only nursery and does not sell by catalog or internet. Monrovia plants are sold nation wide by independent retailers. To verify availability of a specific plant you need to contact the store directly. There is a zip code based dealer locator at the web site to help with contact information.
