| My hyacinths have finished blooming in my garden, in zone 7, and for the first time after 4 years they have sent out pods among the spent leaves. I have never seen pods on a hyacinth. Is this unusual ? Should I harvest them and save them for fall planting ? Thanks. |
| Hyacinths will form seed pods if the faded flowers are not cut off or deadheaded. It is better to remove the faded blooms so the bulbs do not waste energy on seed formation. (The bulbs need to rebuild their strength so they can bloom nicely next spring.) Sometimes they will self sow in the garden if left alone. If you try saving the seed, make sure it is fully matured before you harvest it. Keep in mind that if you planted a named variety, any seedlings probably will not match the parent plant. In my experience it is better to cut them off and allow the bulbs to conserve their strength. Enjoy your hyacinths! |
