| I have a 13 year old Red Prince Weigalia. The stalks are rather thik and the bushes seem to contain less leaf sprouts. My question is, would it be best to cut this back, and will that promote new growth?? Or do these type of shrubs have a certain lifespan, and I may have just reached it. | Pruning your weigela on an annual basis will keep it vigorous and happy. If yours is overgrown and needs renovation, you can prune it back hard which will encourage healthy new growth. Start by completely removing some of the oldest stems and reducing the height of others. If you alternate the length of the stems, you'll end up with a somewhat natural looking form and it should fill out with new stems and foliage later this spring. If your renewal pruning doesn't coax your shrub into new growth, it may have reached the end of its lifespan and will need to be replaced. But I'd encourage you to try pruning it back hard this spring before completely giving up on it. Hope it rewards your efforts with lots of new growth! |
