Without seeing the plant I can only offer an educated guess. I think your plant is Clematis cartmanni 'Joe'. This plant is evergreen in your gardening zone. It is from New Zealand and has firm, deeply cut but delicate evergreen foliage covered in flat open white flowers with yellow stamens. They are small but produced in great quantity. It flowers in Mar-Apr, grows only 4-6ft, and requires protection from strong winds. Plant your clematis in full sunshine to light afternoon shade and prune it lightly after it has finished blooming. Best wishes with your new clematis!
