Here's a list of plants generally used in Japanese gardens. I've included a few trees along with the shrubs and groundcovers - just in case. Acer buergerianum 'Naruto' (Trident Maple), Aucuba japonica (Japanese laurel), Berberis amurensis (Amur barberry), Berberis thunbergii (Japanese barberry), Cephalotaxus harringtonia (Plum yew), Cercidiphyllum magnificum forma pendulum (weeping form of Katsura tree), weeping form Chamaecyparis pisifera 'Squarrosa', Crataegus monogyna ( Hawthorn), Cryptomeria japonica (Japanese cedar, especially the cultivar 'Angelica'), Ginkgo biloba (Maidenhair tree), Ilex aquifolium (English Holly), Juniperus chinensis 'Kaizuka' (Chinese juniper), Juniperus horizontalis, Juniperus procumbens 'Nana', Ligustrum ovalifolium (California privet), Liriope spicata (Lilyturf), Mahonia repens (Creeping mahonia), Phyllostachys flexuosa (Zigzag bamboo), Pieris japonica (Japanese pieris), Pinus densiflora (Japanese red pine), Pinus mugo (Mugho pine), Pseudolarix amabilis (Golden larch), Sasa veitchii (Kuma bamboo grass), Shibataea kumasasa (Ruscus-leaved bamboo), Styphnolobium japonicum 'Pendula' (Weeping pagoda tree), Taxus (Yew), Taxus baccata 'Repandens', Thuja standishii (Japanese Thuja), and Torreya nucifera (Japanese torreya). Best wishes with your design!
