I have had a ceanothus for about 40 years, and it is slowly deteriorating. It is the variety that has 6-8 inch leaves and is currently blooming, although some years it has bloomed in April. I would like to know where I can buy a new one to replace it.

There are actually quite a few large-leafed ceanothus and they vary inflower color so I'm not sure which one you're looking for. Here's a web address with names and photos of Ceanothus arboreus cultivars: http://www.elnativogrowers.com...

Why not visit the site and see if you can find a duplicate shrub? By the way, Ceanothus generally doesn't live quite as long as yours has. You must be keeping it very happy with all your good care!
