I am growing a Alice du Pont Mandevilla plant outdoors. I want to use a large pot near my front door - can I safely re-pot the plant from the plastic nursery container into my pot? I was concerned with whether the roots needed to be crowded in order to produce great blooms all summer. Thanks for the help.

These plants do best in full sun and a warm location and appreciate evenly moist and rich soil. When well grown this vine can become quite large and likes a bit of trellis or lattice to climb, so a larger pot is better as the season progresses. Repotting might be a good thing to do if it is getting crowded in the nursery container. You may want to use a slow release fertilizer in the pottings mix when you do it.

If you plan to bring the plant inside in the fall to try to save it for next year, that might have a bearing on the size container you grow it in this summer. It is better to bring it inside pot and all rather than unpot it for the winter.

I hope this helps.
