| I just planted some climbing roses that will grow along some trellises that start 4 feet off the ground. Right now they are attached to bamboo poles for support, but how to I get the roses to grow on the trellis? Do I need to fasten them some how to the trellis, or will they grow naturally? Do I need to remove the bamboo supports at any time? They are already about 5 feet tall. Thanks for your help! |
| You can weave the canes through the trellis when they are young and pliable and/or tie them to it. If this is a rose that can be left on the trellis year round, either way is fine. If, however you need to take it down each winter to provide extra winter protection to the rose canes, you will want to be able to untie them -- or else have a way to take the trellis down. You can remove the bamboo supports once the roses are attached to the trellis. Use a soft fabric such as nylon stocking or strips of old tee shirt, tie in a figure eight pattern once around the rose and once around the trellis. Do not tie them tightly, you do not want the tie to cut into the cane. Eventually they seem to tangle themselves together and may not need too many more ties. The purpose of tieing them is mostly to keep them growing in the direction you want them to go. Enjoy your rose! |
