Can you advise me about seeds which I can grow in large containers? I've got a spot that gets fairly good sun.

Almost any plant will adapt to growing in containers. Use commercial potting soil rather than regular garden soil, and be sure to water often because containers dry out rather quickly in the summer sunshine. You can sprinkle the seed on the soil and cover it lightly, or start your seeds in flats and transplant them into your containers.

Good cutting garden flowers that are easy to grow from seed include marigolds, coreopsis, purple coneflower, cosmos, zinnias, snapdragons, phlox, dianthus, asters, columbine and verbascum.

Good luck with your new endeavor!
