Aucuba japonica 'Variegata', the gold dust plant, will grow in full sun to part shade in well draining soils. To help it establish a deep root system, water deeply but infrequently (when the top inch of soil dries out). If you fertilize your plant, do so in early spring before new growth begins. Aside from regular watering, Aucuba is relatively maintenance free.
