Regarding your Star Showers Virginia Creeper. I have planted 2 of these plants next to a half brock/half rough stucco wall. Both vines are growing slowly (planted 2+ weeks ago) One vine is dropping down instead of going up. Go I need any thype of support to get this to climps the sides of my house or will it climb naturally after spreading? Thanks |
You can try directing the new growth to follow along the foundation (rather than growing outward) and it will find its own way up. If it is not yet clinging, it will do so once it starts growing vigorously. If it bothers you you can trim the droopy bit off -- it will grow back. The old saying about vines is first year they sleep, second year they creep, third year they leap. Your vines will spend their energy on becoming rooted and established and then they will begin to grow. By the third year or so they will really hit their stride. This vine will climb on its own using holdfasts. I should caution you that they have the potential to pull down loose stucco by their weight and their holdfasts will exploit any little cracks in stucco or mortar and can potentially cause problems that way. The holdfasts are impossible to remove if ever you pull down the vine. If your brick is in good condition, it should be okay on that part of your house but you may want to keep it trimmed off the stucco and any wood. |
