The Q&A Archives: Sweet Autumn Clematis

Question: Is Sweet Autumn Clematis more hardy than the other varieties? Can its roots handle the heat, unlike the others?

Answer: In my experience the sweet autumn clematis is a very sturdy plant with a strong constitution -- nowhere near as fussy as the other Clematis -- and does well in both heat and cold winters. You would still want to mulch it with several inches of organic mulch year round, and water it carefully the first year while it becomes established just as you would for any new plant.
