Our porch has minimum sun, but during the middle of the day experiences some direct light for a couple of hours. We want a plant to go in a large pot and were wondering what kinds would be the best. thank you for your time.

I'd look for shade to part-sun plants such as Daylily, Coral Bells or even Hosta. Daylily (Hemerocallis) is easy to grow, has a long bloom period, is diesease free, and is not fussy about soil conditions. Try ?Stella d?Oro?, ?Happy Returns?, ?Miss Mary?, ?Miss Tinkerbell?, ?Miss MaryMary?, ?Lady Emily?, ?Lady Eva?, or ?Lady Scarlett?.

Coral bells or Heuchera grow in a circular mound with leaves that are delicate and shaped somewhat like ivy. They have become popular in recent years because of the new varieties of patterned colored foliage which are perfect for edging, as a specimen, even a tapestried ground cover. The flowers are delicate bells on long slender stems. They like to be planted deep and prefer light shade and soil rich in organic matter. The clumps grow to 15" to 24" high and wide. Evergreen foliage.

Hosta has over seventy species and hundreds of crosses between them. They are simple to grow, disease free and not prey to bugs, only the dreaded slug. Not fussy about moisture, keep them on the dry side to discourage slugs. Forming a circular mound of leathery oval or round leaves, they carry bell shaped flowers on long stems above them. They are grown for the foliage which can be green, blue, gold, yellow, and many variations in between, varying in height from 8" to 42." Golden fall color is typical. These grow in sun to deep shade.

For added color, pop in a few shade-loving annuals such as lobelia, impatiens or pansies. Enjoy!
