You need to consider the overall size of the planting space as well as type of soil you have, if it is especially wet or dry, whether or not it is sunny all or part of the day, and whether or not there is wind. Do want a vine, a shrub, a tree or a flowering perennial? Evergreen or deciduous? You might also want to consider how your choice will fit in with the rest of your landscaping and your overall design goals.
