I live in NM and mostly have soil that is claylike. I just planted Lavender Cotton and recently read

Clay soils do not drain quickly, which may distress your lavender cotton. You can water carefully, making sure the soil dries out between waterings, or you can uproot your plant, amend the planting area with compost or other organic matter to help the area drain well, then replant.
