I was given a cutting from a huge (ceiling height) plant. Its owner told me it blooms once a year with a smell so powerful it drives her out of the house. She called it a "night blooming serious." I know I have the spelling wrong but I'm hoping you can give me the proper name so I can research it.

I'm sure you are referring to the Night Blooming Cereus. It is a true cacti. Feed it very lightly and give it water as you would water an ordinary house plant during its growing season. While it's not active just water it enough to keep it from shriveling. Some grow to 40 feet high. I hope you have a vaulted ceiling!
