Thyme is an excellent groundcover beneath roses. There are many varieties, including wooly thyme and caraway (smells like caraway seeds when stepped upon). You might also try Pratia, which has tiny blue flowers and takes occasional foot traffic. Best wishes with your roses and the rest of your garden!
