The Q&A Archives: Australian tree fern

Question: will an Australian Tree fern do well if potted in a large pot as a deck plant

Answer: Austrailan tree ferns can grow 20' high and 12' wide at maturity, but while small they make interesting container plants. It can be grown outdoors in the summertime in your region, but it is not winter hardy in Portland. Plant it in a big pot, provide some filtered afternoon shade, and plan to protect it from ice and snow this winter by taking it indoors (or into a greenhouse).
