There are now patches of nothing that I can call grass and then there are those patches that have long stems and some funny looking reddish tops. Then there is the patch at the front of my home that the previous owners planted with low lying evergreen (which I hate) that is growing either flowers or some new breed of weeds with red and lavender flowers. | A month is a very short time frame for lawn work, but you might be able to seed smaller bare spots using a lawn patch kit. These are sold at garden centers and include the seed and mulch and instructions. If the areas are larger, you will need to remove or herbicide the existing weeds, loosen the soil, work in some organic matter, rake it level, seed, then roll with a very light lawn roller, then toss a light layer of mulching straw over top, then water as needed to keep it moist until it germinates, then begin weaning the water as it grows. It is already a bit late to be trying to grow grass seed, so you would need to get started right away. If you are careful to keep it watered, it might work. In the meantime, the best thing you can do for your lawn is mow it often enough that you never remove more than one third of the height at a time.
