Answer: It sounds as though your young tree needs to be pruned back into a pyramidal shape. Pruning now will probably affect the fruit production this year but once you've established a strong pattern of branch work, the tree will be stronger and healthier. Commercial growers "head back" the central leader (cut it down slightly) to encourage side branching and then reduce the length of the side branches so it has a Christmas tree appearance.
