I heard not pruning tomato plants will encourage more growth, more fruit, more leaves, and require less care than unpruned plants. Is that true? Should I prune my indeterminate cherry tomato plants? Thanks!! |
There's no one right or wrong way to grow tomatoes--only experience will tell you which works best for you. If you do prune your plants, by removing suckers that sprout between the leaf and the stem, you'll get a tidier-looking plant that is easier to care for and pick from. You may also have less trouble with disease, since there will be better air circulation. You probably won't, however, get a higher yield than on an unpruned plant. Regarding your cherry tomatoes in particular--if you have two or more plants, why not try pruning one and not the other, and see what you think? Regardless of what you do, cherry tomatoes usually produce lots and lots of fruit, so you really have nothing to lose by experiementing. |
