The Q&A Archives: When to Prune

Question: You told me a while back to prune early in the spring. When you say

Answer: Early spring refers to just before new growth starts to push out. Pruning is "stressful" to a plant, so as a general guideline we don't want to prune just as a plant is heading into the heat of summer, which is also stressful! However, you can prune off a few old/dead branches now to clean-up a plant. Never remove more than one-third of a plant in any season. It reduces the material available to photosynthesize, basically "starving" the plant. Hope this info helps!
