| Hello, less than 2 wks ago I planted a new meyer lemon in a plastic container with regular potting soil. I watered the tree at that time with about 1/2 gallon of water. Now it is more than a week, I check the plant with the moisture meter it still shows very wet. I thought it will need to water at least once or twice a week, especially it is in a container. Should I mix something to the soil so it will have a better drainage? Or is it too late now? Should I wait for meter till it says dry to water it? I will be going away for the long weekend, I don't know it will be ok without watering it for almost 2 wks. thanks |
| I hope the plastic container has adequate drainage holes so the excess moisture can drain out of the bottom! If not, your lemon tree should be transplanted immediately; if so, there's nothing to worry about. Trees use varying amounts of water depending upon whether they are actively growing, the relative humidity, and how high the daytime temperatures are. I wouldn't rely on a moisture meter - your fingers will give you a better indication of whether or not your plant needs water. Stick your finger into the soil, down past the second knuckle. If it feels cool and moist, you won't need to water for a few days; if it feels dry, it's time to water. When you do water, apply the water slowly so it has a chance to trickle down and wet the entire roots mass. I'm not sure your plant will be happy growing without water for 2 weeks. You may want to ask a neighbor to take care of it while you're gone. Just a thought - |
