I want to plant a row of tallish shrubs to hide the side of a garage. It is pretty much in the shade the majority of the day. I have a small yard, so want something that looks neat and clean.

Unfortunately, few shrubs will do well in heavy shade all day. Your selection will depend on what time of day it is sunny, what type of soil you have, how wet or dry the soil tends to be in that spot, if it is windy there (especially in winter) whether or not the water pours off the roof onto the planting area, and how large the planting area is. Depending on the conditions along the garage, you might be able to grow Pieris japonica, one of the hardier boxwoods such as Green Velvet or Green Mountain, Ilex glabra, or possibly the white flowered Hydrangea arborescens. I would strongly suggest you work with your local professional nursery staff to analyze the growing conditions where you want to plant and identify shrubs that would thrive there, then select the one you like best from those.
