| i have a question that is sort of twofold...can a pothos plant become too root bound? i have a pothos that seemed very healthy, until recently....there are roots showing on top of the soil, and i recently moved it from on top of my fridge...where it got moderate lighting, to a spot in front of the window in my living room....now the leaves seem to periodically turn yellowish, and the top and center seem to becoming less filled in...any help would be greatly appreciated....lisa |
| Yellowing can be a sign of different problems. In this case, if you moved it to a much brighter location it may have sunburned. (This plant does well in low and medium light locations. In front of a sunny window it needs a sheer curtain to filter the light or move it further back into the room.) Or, if it is rootbound, it might have tried to put out a spring growth spurt in response to the longer days and this would stress it. Or, you may find that it is growing more and warmer, and also has gotten larger in relation to the pot, so it needs more water more often. Over or underfertilizing can also cause yellowing. (Use a water soluble fertilizer such as 10-10-10 plus minors at the lower rate on the label, feed from spring through fall when it is actively growing.) In any case, it sounds as though it would benefit from repotting if roots are showing and this is a good time of year to do that. Repot into a slightly larger container and loosen any tight roots so they are directed outward. To encourage more branching you can pinch off the growing tips, too. You might also leach the soil about three times a year to flush out any accumulated salts. To do that, water thoroughly and heavily and let the excess drain, then repeat in quick succession. Do this before you repot and then every four months or so. I hope this helps! |
