The Q&A Archives: root systems of a mexican fan palm

Question: is it safe to plant a fan palm near septic lines and what kind of root system does it have. I am getting ready to plant my mexican fan palm between two septic lines and wanted to be sure that it was safe and would not damage the lines. I look foward to your response. Thank you for your time. Tammy Rumsey

Answer: Palm trees typically have root systems that grow down rather than out. Usually they remain with two feet of the trunk and venture down 3-4 feet. I can't say whether or not the roots will interfere with your septic system - it depends upon how close you plant your palm. Best wishes with your garden!
