is it safe to plant a fan palm near septic lines and what kind of root system does it have. I am getting ready to plant my mexican fan palm between two septic lines and wanted to be sure that it was safe and would not damage the lines. I look foward to your response. Thank you for your time. Tammy Rumsey

Palm trees typically have root systems that grow down rather than out. Usually they remain with two feet of the trunk and venture down 3-4 feet. I can't say whether or not the roots will interfere with your septic system - it depends upon how close you plant your palm. Best wishes with your garden!
