You may deadhead or trim off the faded blooms if you wish but it is not really necessary. When the shrub grows larger it will be a very time consuming job so most gardeners don't usually bother to do it. Cut just outside a leaf or a side branch. Go to the closest leaf, or if that branch is excessively long, you can cut a bit more off. This plant usually has a very symmetrical natural shape as it matures so it does not need much if any pruning. If you do need to prune something off, the best time to do so is immediately after the plant blooms. Enjoy your little lilac!
