I WANT TO KNOW IF THE EMERALD ISLE WILL MAINTAIN IT'S COLUMNAR SHAPE. I SAW SOME LOCALLY AND THEY LOOK DIFFERENT FROM OTHER LEYLAND'S I'VE SEEN - THEY APPEAR TIGHTER AND NARROW. THE LOOK I WANT TO ACHIEVE IS THAT OF ITALIAN CYPRESS. WOULD THESE WORK, OR WOULD YOU RECOMMEND ANYTHING ELSE FOR MY ZONE 6 AREA?

Leyland cypress can be pruned to shape, but to avoid that type of ongoing maintenance you might look at the columnar arborvitaes and upright junipers. These will have naturally tall and narrow forms without pruning and also have better winter hardiness more suited to your area. Your local professional nurseryman should be able to show you some of these.
