I wanted to know where to get these plants? My grandfather has planted winter onions for ever, but I have never seen them in a catalog. They are eaten like a green onion in spring.

I think you may be talking about "bunching onions". Burpee's heirloom catalog has a variety called 'Evergreen White Bunching (He-Shi Ko)'. They can be planted in the summer for harvest fall through spring which is why some folks call them "winter onions". If you don't have an heirloom catalog, contact Burpee at 1-800-888-1447 to obtain one.
