| Datura, or Angel's Trumpet, is popular for its magnifcent 10 inch long flaring trumpet-like flowers. There are two species, Datura canidida and D. suaveolens. The plants like average houlsehold temperatures and bright light - some direct sunlight is beneficial. Water sparingly in winter, but regularly in spring and summer, and mist leaves occasionally. They propagate best from stem cuttings taken in the spring and rooted in regular potting soil with bottom heat. If you've collected seeds from Datura flowers, remove the corky seed coat and germinate the seed in moist potting soil in a warm, dark place, like on top of the refrigerator. After it sprouts, place the seedling in a warm, brightly lit area and keep the soil moist. Flowering will not occur until the plant reaches maturity - about two years after germination. |
