| I have a large patio made of decorative stepping stones. I am looking for something to plant between the stones, that is compact, accepting of foot traffic, and suited for my climate. With the patio being large, spreading habit and cost are a factor. |
| Finding something that fits all those requirements is difficult, especially the part about accepting foot traffic. Bugle weed (Ajuga reptans) is a low-growing, durable, ground cover; however, it will not thrive in very sandy soils. Cape-weed (Phyla nodiflora) will accept some foot traffic, and is easy to establish by plugs or sprigs. Common periwinkle grows to a height of about 8 inches, and has beautiful blue or white flowers. Creeping Charlie (Pilca nummulariifolia) grows to 1-2in., but can become a weed problem. Dichondra carolinensis is native to Florida, it grows to a height of 1-2 in. and it will accept some foot traffic. Partridgeberry (Mitchella repens) grows to 1-2 in.; it grows best in acid soils in the shade, and it, too,will accept some foot traffic. I hope this is helpful. |
