| Fortunately, there are some varieties of holly that can survive in zone 4, although they differ from the traditional glossy-leaved, red-berried hollies of warmer climates. Ilex glabra (inkberry) and Ilex x meservae (Meserve holly) are both quite hardy evergreens. Inkberry grows 6-8 feet, and Meserve holly grows to 12 feet. Boxwoods such as Buxus microphylla (Littleleaf boxwood) and Buxux microphylla koreana (Korean boxwood) are hardy to zone 5, but may survive in colder areas with protection from wind and sun during the winter. They should be planted in northern or eastern exposure. Korean boxwood grows to 3 feet and Littleleaf boxwood grows to 6 feet. Both are quite slow-growing. |
