| 1) I am loking for a specimen plant that is an evergreen and can tolerate xome shade and takes up a smallh space . One suuggestion was a Little Gem Magnolia, I was looking for an alternative. 2) I want a rounded , small boxwood that can tolerate shade.and is resistenat to browning. Thanks |
| The Little Gem magnolia is a tree rather than a small plant, it grows to about 25 feet tall and 15 feet wide. It is also only considered reliably winter hardy to zone 7, but according to your zip code you are gardening in zone 6. If you are looking in that size range, you might consider Dragon Lady holly, Ilex x meserveae 'Dragon Lady' Plant Patent No. 4996. This is a slow grower to about the same height but much narrower, only about six feet wide. It will tolerate some shade and is winter hardy to zone 5. There are several boxwoods that old their green color nicely in winter. You could consider "Green Velvet" which grows slowly to about three to four feet higha nd wide over time. Your local professional nursery staff may have other suggestions based on a more detailed understanding of your planting site and design goals. |
