| I recently received 2 plants (hibiscus 4ft and a kalanchoe 8-9") as housewarming gifts for my new apartment which has an eastern and southern exposures. I also have a terrace. I know nothing about plants. I'd appreciate your assistance! |
| Hibiscus likes average warmth, minimum of 55F in the winter. Try to give it as much light as possible, but shade from really hot sun. Keep the soil moist at all times in all seasons except winter when you should reduce watering. Also, do not fertilizein the winter months (Sept. - March). Mist the leaves occasionally with a fine spray. When spring and summer do roll around, fertilize with a simple analysis fertilizer such as a 5-10-10. The liquid fertilizers you mix with water are fine. Be careful to follow package instructions. Repot every year in the spring. For the kalanchoe, average warmth in winter should be about the same. Lighting is best when placed in an east or west facing windowsill from spring to autumn, a south window in the winter. Water thoroughly, let the soil dry out between waterings. Misting is not necessary. Repot every year in the summer. Fertilize in the same manner as the hibiscus. |
