The Q&A Archives: Saffron

Question: I purchased and planted saffron crocus bulbs last fall. These were planted, but there were no directions on when and how to harvest the stamens.

Answer: Saffron comes from the dried stigmas of the saffron crocus. The yellow threads in the center of each flower are harvested just before the petals wilt and fall away. Collect and dry on paper towels, then keep in an airtight container in a cool, dark place. It takes 100,000 flowers to produce one pound of saffron!
