If you use plain sand, you could possibly grow creeping thyme or creeping sedum between the stones; you will need to use a plant that enjoys full direct sun with reflected heat and a very well drained soil. (Moss will not survive in that type of location.) After the initial planting, you will need to water and weed until they become established and fill in the area.
