The Q&A Archives: identifying japanese tree lilac

Question: I am trying to identify a tree, I think it is a Japanese tree lilac, from the research I have done, but none of the info says anything about this tree having a very powerful odor to its blooms, it just bloomed here in ohio the last 3 weeks. my question is, do thewy have a strange odor to them?

thank you

Answer: The flowers of Japanese Lilac are fragrant, but to some, the fragrance can be considered musky or unpleasant - something like the fragrance of the flowers on a privet. Hope this helps you identify the tree!
