The Q&A Archives: Variegated English Holly

Question: Could you please tell me if the Variegated English Holly has a female and male or if I need to buy one or the other. I recently purchased a holy and am not sure which one i bought if there is a male and female. If there is could you please tell me what I need.
Thank You,
Chris Smith

Answer: The variegated English holly (Ilex aquifolium 'Argenteo Marginata') is a female variety. You would need to plant a male English holly nearby as a pollen source if you want your female holly to produce berries. Gold Coast English Holly (Ilex aquifolium 'Monvila' Plant Patent No. 5143) for example is a male clone. Please check with your local retailers to see which one(s) they might have in stock.
