| I would suggest starting your seeds in pots so you can set out plants that are already up and ready to go. Or you can buy tomato plants. Even with these, you should try to get tomatoes with the fewest days until harvest. Dates until harvest range from a short 44 days right up to 85 days. The trouble is, most of the early set tomatoes are determinate and you asked specifically for indeterminate. So, here are some indeterminates: Burpee has a "Early Girl" which is ready in 54 days, and "Early Pick" ready in 62 days. If you would like to go out on a limb and try a determinate, give "Fourth of July" a shot...you can harvest tomatoes in only 44 days and it is a great producer. It too is available from Burpee. Tomatoes are heavy feeders and need to be side dressed with a 5-10-10 fertilizer at planting time and again approximately every three weeks. Be sure to plant them in soil which you have enriched with lots of organic matter such as compost, leaf mould or composted cow manure. They demand adequate water as well for good fruit production...never let the soil get completely dry. Watering irregularities set up a host of problems. Water is especially important when blossoms appear and when fruit is growing. |
