The Q&A Archives: Tomatoes and Potatoes Together

Question: I planted tomatoes , one plant per 4 square feet, in an area where I grew potatoes last year. A volunteer potato is growing about one foot from one of the tomato plants. Will it be a good companion?

Answer: Potatoes do have some bad habits such as telling bad jokes and letting you pay at restaurants, so I'm not sure they're good companions for everybody. But seriously, potatoes do require similar watering, mulching, and fertilizing schedules and in that sense they are happy companions. On the other hand, potatoes do carry many of the same diseases that tomatoes get and come harvest time, you may damage the roots of your tomato plants when you dig up your tomatoes.
