I want to make a birdbath out of a common clay pot saucer. I understand it needs to be sealed so it won't loose water and also won't absorb water and therefore break in freezing weather. Can you tell me what to use. I don't want to change thecolor.

Saucers for large clay pots make terrific birdbaths. They don't need to be sealed; doing so might be harmful to the birds who visit. Just fill it with water. Once the terra cotta is saturated with water, it won't leak or dribble. Your new birdbath will have to be emptied and stored during the winter or it will freeze and crack. You can substitute a plastic saucer if you want to have a birdbath out all year long.
