Can the tree be grown in a large pot outside. If so, will growing it in a pot control the growth of the tree.

You can grow this in a large container such as a half whiskey barrel size pot. To some extent it will control the size because the roots will be constricted. If you grow it in a container you will have to bring it inside each winter to a place that is cold but above freezing, such as a garage. Since you have to move it, you will probably want to prune it to keep it at a manageable size. On the other hand, if you grow it in the ground, it will probably freeze back to the ground most winters, so will need pruning to remove the dead wood each spring. (This particular fig can bear on new wood, so you would still have a crop.) Again, this helps control size. I hope this answers your question.
