Unfortunately, most evergreens prefer a sunny or partly sunny site. Aucuba will tolerate deep shade or a little morning sun or dappled light all day. It is a slow grower but can top five feet eventually. If there is some direct sun where you want to plant, you would have more choices. Your selection also depends on what time of day there is sun, what type of soil is there, and whether or not it is windy or especially sheltered. Your local professional nursery staff and/or county extension should be able to help you analyze the growing conditions where you want to plant and based on knowing that, identify shrubs that would grow well for you there.
