Bud rot is caused by Phytopthora, a fungus. While all palms are susceptible, most do not develop the disease. Overhead watering (or very wet spring weather) can begin the process of infection. Bud rot is usual fatal because there are no treatments available to homeowners; professional arborists can treat the palm with a fungicide drench and if the disease is not too extensive, the drench can work.
