| Yes, you must grow this as a container plant as it will not survive your winters outdoors. A half barrel size container or other very large container is needed in the long term. It will be very heavy once filled with soil so you may want to use castors or make other arrangements for moving it. You will need to bring it into a sheltered but cold location (above freezing but below 45 degrees) such as an unheated garage each winter. The goal is to protect it from extreme cold but to keep it dormant, you do not want it to grow while it is indoors. Wait until late fall when it has gone dormant before you bring it inside. Water only enough to keep the soil from going bone dry. Do not fertilize while it is dormant. In early spring, take it back outside so it can wake up naturally with the season,and resume regular watering and fertilizing. Enjoy your fig tree! |
