Is it necessary to cut off last year's berries in order to get new berries this year on my holly bushes?

It's not necessary to remove the berries. In fact, local birds may find them and eat them, so leave the berries where they are. Berries remaining this spring will decompose and fall off. New flower buds will develop after new growth begins and a new crop of red berries should appear next winter.
