star magnolia - Knowledgebase Question

my mother has a star magnolia in the front yard, it got to the point when it was so big that my sister's would not walk pass it, thing that someone was behind it. well it is about 18 foot hight and now is a tree. what part of the season is good to trim that it won't hurt the plant. for the next season. people in the area love this bush/tree that we have.

Without seeing the plant it is very difficult to understand how you wish to trim it and by how much, and to know how that would relate to the branch structure as it has developed over time -- if it is feasible, or not. Since this is now such a large tree I would strongly suggest you consult on site with a professionally trained and certified arborist who has experience with ornamental trees for help in determining the best way to prune it. If you are talking about removing a substantial portion of the plant it would really be best to have professional guidance and equipment to do the job safely -- both for you and for the tree. I'm sorry I can't be more specific long distance.
