I have a large sunny and dry area that I would like to put a lawn. I like the way Zoysia looks but am concerned that it may not do well in the hot summer. The area will also have a lot of traffic (pets and people). Is zoysia practical for me? If not, what else should I try?

Zoysia stands traffic well, as it forms a dense sod, but it takes time to fill in. It is moderately drought-resistant, but it requires irrigation to stay healthy. You'd be better off with centipedegrass. Before you sow seed, have your extension service (ph# 512/473-9600) help you with a soil test, so you can take steps to prepare the soil. They can also help you choose a variety that is best suited to your situation.
