The Q&A Archives: Lenten Rose meltdown

Question: I have a large flower bed in my front yard with about 20 Lenten roses planted around the perimeter. About 2 weeks ago, the one closest to the walkway just died. I mean, it turned brown and crubly split in the center and fell to the ground. Now the second one is starting to do the same thing. What could the problem be? These LR's have been planted for probably 5-6 years, but about 2 1/2 months ago the 50ft bradford pear that was in the center of the bed collapsed and fell. We have since replanted 3 15ft. red maples in it's place, but it isn't as quite as shady. could that be the cause or do you think they have some sort of disease?
